  • Recognize the common and rare patterns of presentation involving abusive abdominal trauma.
  • Recognize common and rare injury patterns seen in different types of intentional and non-intentional deaths.
  • Recognize the multiple factors underlying internet crimes against children.
  • Recognize the evidence and arguments surrounding signs and symptoms of abusive head trauma.
  • Be aware of different terminology utilized in cases of family violence.
  • Discuss various cases of sexual and physical abuse using case scenario and image review to better identify abuse presentations.
  • Recognize the role of the frontline responder in cases of child maltreatment including the importance of documenting history, injuries and crime scene.
  • Be aware of the accuracy of confessions and current media concerns including false confessions and coercion.
  • Identify key indicators on history and physical examination that help delineate medical from psychological causes of failure to thrive.
  • Identify factors which influence the clinical and psychological outcomes for victims of child maltreatment.


To provide up to date instruction on prevention, recognition, intervention, treatment & investigation of child abuse for physicians, nurses, pathologists, law enforcement, Justice of the Peace, attorneys, social workers, CPS workers, emergency department personnel and first responders and all other related professions.

Continuing Education

NURSES: Driscoll Children's Hospital is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
Nurses be will awarded up to 16 CNE contact hours. Nurses must attend each claimed session in its entirety and complete an evaluation for receipt of contact hours.

PHYSICIANS: CME ACCREDITATION - Driscoll Children's Hospital is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians

CREDIT ACCREDITATION - Driscoll Children's Hospital designates this live educational activity for a maximum of [fourteen (14)] hours in AMA PRA Category I Credit %u2122. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This course has been designated by Driscoll Children's Hospital for two hour(s) of education in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.

SOCIAL WORKERS: Driscoll Children's Hospital is an approved provider of continuing education by the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners. This activity is approved for 14 credit hours from the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners. This activity is approved for 7 credit hours per day for a total of 14 credit hours for both days, to include 2 hours of ethics. Requirements include completion of evaluation and monitoring forms to receive CEUs.
