Christmas in July

BROWNSVILLE - Santa filled his sleigh with toys donated for patients at the annual 'Christmas in July' event at Driscoll Children's Specialty Center - Brownsville on Thursday, July 21.

"Nora Garcia, event chairperson and more than 30 Driscoll staff and volunteers made the evening possible. Donations surpassed expectations and exceeded those collected last year," said Suzy Spencer, Brownsville Auxiliary chairperson.

More than 200 community members, parents and children attended the event and donated unwrapped toys. Donations and support from many local business and organizations also helped make the evening a success. The donations are used to provide clinic patients with gifts throughout the year and at the annual holiday party held during the Christmas season.

There was singing, dancing and refreshments as box after box was filled to the brim with unwrapped toys. Children had their faces painted by a clown and had the opportunity to build their own birdhouses. Visiting animals from the Gladys Porter Zoo were a hit with the crowd.

"We are grateful for the outstanding support we receive from the Rio Grande Valley community. Events like this make it possible for the Auxiliary to continue bringing smiles to the children who come to Driscoll for treatment," said Spencer.
