Anticipation building for Driscoll's annual holiday cards

Christmas may be several months away but excitement is already in the air at Driscoll Children's Hospital, where members of the volunteer Auxiliary have begun packaging 14,000 annual holiday cards. Seven Driscoll patients from throughout South Texas designed the cards for 2011. Last year, the Auxiliary sold over 20,000 cards.
"Packaging the cards marks the start of the holiday season for the Auxiliary," said Lizette Saenz, director of Volunteers Services at Driscoll. "The volunteers take pride in showcasing the patients' artwork."

The cards will be available to the public beginning on Sept. 21. That's when a celebrity gala will be held to officially unveil them and recognize the patients who designed them. The annual event in Driscoll's auditorium is always a dazzling, Hollywood-style affair, with a red carpet for the patient artists, lights, cameras and lots of applause. The children even autograph their artwork for their fans.

The holiday cards will be sold through Driscoll's web site and at the hospital's Carousel Gift Shop. In addition, a holiday apron, storybook, silver angel charm, kitchen towel, t-shirt and Christmas tree ornament, also designed by the patients, will be for sale. Proceeds from all the items will go toward the Marcia K. Wilcox scholarship for former or current cancer patients at Driscoll, which has benefited more than 90 recipients since its inception.
