Driscoll's transplant team says 'thank you' with annual reunion

It was a beautiful day April 28 for Driscoll's fifth annual Transplant Reunion, which was held at West Guth Park in Corpus Christi. The event, a celebration for the hospital's kidney transplant patients and their families, included moon bounces, pony rides, face painting, games of all sorts, prizes and food. Most importantly, it was a chance for the patients, families and transplant team to visit and have fun.

"This is our way of saying 'thank you' to the families for their trust and for sharing their kids with us not only in sickness but also in health," said Samhar Al-Akash, MD, head of nephrology and medical director of Driscoll Children's Kidney Center. "The Transplant Reunion reminds us what is important in life and to keep doing what we do because our kids deserve the best."

Driscoll Children's Hospital began performing kidney transplants in 2007. Fifty-five children had received new kidneys as of April 28, 2012.
