Salary and Benefits
Residents are paid on a bi-weekly basis. Payroll is completed via direct deposit to the resident’s bank account. Salaries are competitive with other regional pediatric residency programs.

PL-1 residents- $56,762
PL-2 residents- $58,900
PL-3 residents- $60,600

Biannual Retreats
It’s important for our residents to spend time outside of the hospital with co-residents and medical education staff.
In late October, we go to a retreat at Camp Aranzazu—about 50 miles away from campus—and spend a weekend of fun and camaraderie with the Program Director, Associate Program Directors and Chief Residents. Some of the activities done in the past have included paint ball, zip lining, wall climbing, and the Amazing Race concluding the event.
In Spring, a second retreat is held (usually a single-day event.) Past activities include spending time on the beach or day camping at Lake Corpus Christi. Families are encouraged to participate.
The result: participants return to the hospital feeling recharged and with a greater sense of togetherness.
Resident Wellness Activities
With the challenge of our residency curriculum and the responsibilities of patient care, we make sure to bake resident wellness activities into our program.
Resident-Led Activities

Wellness Curriculum
We have a robust wellness curriculum aimed at providing tools for physicians. Dr. Parmar engages residents through case-based discussion on wellness issues related to their working environment, how to prevent burnout and promote mental health.
Meetings
Residents represent DCH in several meetings such as AAP, TPS and annual Jacobi Jug competition—along with various symposiums and conferences.
Yearly Resident Research Day
Residents are required to complete a hypothesis-driven research project and present it at this annual event held in May—and are also encouraged to submit their research to the Texas Pediatric Society’s annual Resident Research Poster competition.
Medical Education QI Symposium
Residents are required to present their QI projects every June to a panel of QI leaders in the hospital during our annual Medical Education QI Symposium.
