Lean On Me

The death of a loved one is one of the most difficult challenges a family may ever have to face. Children grieve differently than adults, and depending on their age and developmental level, their interpretation of death is not always the same as an adult's.

Lean On Me (LOM) is a structured six week bereavement support group for children and families who have experienced the loss of a loved one through death.

It is designed to provide support not therapy, children do best in a group if they can be with their same age peers. It allows the children the opportunity to meet other children their age who have had a loss. Children must be 6 years of age to attend.

Grief is a family process and impacts the entire family system. The adult group meets simultaneously.

The support groups are facilitated by a Child Life Specialist, a Social Worker, and a Chaplain. The support group sessions are offered in the Spring and Fall and are held at the Driscoll Hospital campus.

A one day bereavement camp (Camp Lean On Me) is held at Camp Aransazu and offered in the summer. For more information about the groups, camp, or information on explaining death to children, contact our Child Life Department @ 361-694-5048.
