Driscoll Patients Meet Blood Donors Who Helped Save Their Lives

Two Driscoll Children's Hospital patients recently met the blood donors whose generosity helped save their lives.
Hosted in partnership with the Coastal Bend Blood Center, the Thank the Donor event gave families the opportunity to express their gratitude while showing donors the lasting impact of their lifesaving gift.
It was the first time the patients and local donors met face-to-face.

The emotional reunions highlighted the vital role blood donors play in pediatric healthcare. Every day, children at Driscoll depend on blood transfusions while undergoing surgery, receiving cancer treatment, recovering from traumatic injuries, caring for serious blood disorders and overcoming other life-threatening conditions.
In many cases, blood donated by a community member can help save a child's life just one or two days later. For pediatric patients, access to fresh blood products is especially important, making every donation a critical resource for the hospital's medical teams.
Driscoll Children's Hospital uses an average of 450 to 500 units of blood and blood products each month to care for children across South Texas. Because blood cannot be manufactured, every transfusion depends on volunteer donors who choose to give.
