Purpose: The purpose of the Driscoll Health System’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) program is to promote continuous improvement in patient care by providing educational activities for physicians involved in the care of pediatric patients and pregnant women.
Content Areas: The activities will educate physicians on the epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and management of the physical and psychosocial problems of pediatric patients. This will include a broad range of recent advances, current concerns, common problems, and ethical issues and address identified quality issues from the entire spectrum of pediatric healthcare and care of pregnant women.
Target Audience: The primary target audience will be the physician and surgeon staff of Driscoll Children’s Hospital, referring physicians, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, and obstetrics (in support of Driscoll Health Plan) engaged in child healthcare in South Texas.
Types of Activities: The program will consist of a series of lectures and courses, along with targeted educational offerings utilizing video, internet, enduring materials and information system computer technology as needed. Cisco WebEx online broadcasting services is a tool we use that allows attendees to view CME activities from their electronic devices.
Expected Results of the Program: Activities are expected to enhance physician competence and performance. For selected activities, physicians will be asked on the electronic evaluation form to assess if any elements of the information provided will be incorporated into future practice. Selected activities are coordinated with Hospital and Driscoll Health Plan quality initiatives to contribute to change in patient outcomes. This effort is monitored in conjunction with appropriate quality committees. The CME Committee analyzes the activities conducted through the CME department to assess the degree to which the mission statement has been met.
