Roxana Flores named 2026 Nurse of the Year at Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley

NICU nurse Roxana “Roxy” Flores has been named the 2026 Nurse of the Year at Driscoll Children's Hospital Rio Grande Valley, recognized for her compassion, leadership and unwavering support for families and colleagues.

Flores serves as co-chair of the NICU Education Committee, Charge Nurse, Resource Nurse, and participates in the Unit Based Council and Peer Review. NICU leadership said her presence consistently strengthens both patient care and team support.

Her recognition includes a DAISY Award nomination, an international program honoring nurses for extraordinary, compassionate care. At Driscoll, the award recognizes nurses who go above and beyond for children and families across South Texas.

In the nomination, one family described Flores as a “beacon of hope and comfort” during their NICU journey.

“During our NICU journey this nurse became a true beacon of hope and comfort,” the nomination read. “When our baby faced unexpected complications, she remained by our side offering not only expert care, but also unwavering support. She took time to explain every procedure, wiped away our tears, and reassured us with her calming presence.”

“Beyond her medical skills, it was the way she gently soothed our babies, whispering words of encouragement and holding their tiny hand, that truly touched our hearts,” the nomination continued. “Her compassion made all the difference, and we will always be grateful for the kindness and dedication she showed in our most vulnerable moments.”
